Purpose

Although few studies demonstrated the ability of MRI cine sequences to assess right ventricular diastolic function no data are available for MR velocity encoding, despite their usefulness on the left ventricle. Accordingly our aim was to assess the ability of MRI velocity data to evaluate right ventricular diastolic function, as compared to Doppler echocardiography in terms of association with aging.

Methods and Materials

We studied 90 healthy subjects (52 men, age:40±14 years) who underwent right ventricular Doppler echocardiography and velocity encoding MRI on the same day. Acquisition. Cine Steady State Free Precession data were used to position a retrospectively ECG-gated through plane velocity sequence (encoding velocity =150cm/s), in a plane perpendicular to the tricuspid inflow at the level of the tips of the opened leaflets. Results

Subjects characteristics are described in figure 3. Despite the fair correlations between echocardiography and MR-PC early to late peak flow-rate (Ef/Af) and velocity (E/A) ratios (r>0.36; p<0.001) the strongest association with age was obtained for the MR-PC ratio Ef/Af (r=-0.65, p<0.001). Associations with age for velocity ratios were equivalent between MR (r=-0.41, p<0.001) and echocardiography (r=-0.36, p<0.001). Contribution of early filling (Ef/FV) was also significantly associated to age (r=0.42, p<0.001). Conclusion

Automatically extracted MR-PC tricuspid inflow parameters were strongly related to age. These associations were comparable to echocardiography for maximal velocities ratio and were stronger when considering peak flow-rates ratio, such index being less sensitive to changes in flow orientation. These findings suggest the consistency of MRI for diastolic assessment and its potential usefulness for clinical right ventricular function evaluation.
