Learning objectives
The objective of this study was to evaluate our initial clinical experience with MRI-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy in Chinese women.
Background
The use of breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for screening,
diagnosis,
staging,
and management of breast lesion is rapidly increasing in China.
The breasts of Chinese women are denser and smaller than that of western women.
MRI is highly sensitive for the detection of benign and malignant abnormalities that are occult to physical examination,
ultrasound,
and mammography.
Investigators have reported the high sensitivity (94%~100%) of breast MRI but moderate and variable specificity.

Imaging findings OR Procedure details
A retrospective review revealed 6 consecutive nonpalpable,
mammographically occult MRI-detected breast lesions scheduled for MRI-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy.
Biopsy was performed with a 8-gauge vacuum-assisted biopsy probe (Mammotome Systems).
1.5T MR scanner (Signa,
GE Healthcare) and a dedicated breast surface coil and breast biopsy device are used.
Patients were placed in the prone position in a dedicated phased-array.The breast is stabilized in a biopsy guidance grid by providing moderate compression.
The grid comprised a gadolinium-filled guiding marker.

Conclusion
MRI-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy is a fast and safe method for the diagnosis in nonpalpable,
mammographically occult lesions in Chinese women.
In the case of benign biopsy results,
a 6-month follow-up MRI should be performed.Imaging–histologic correlation is necessary to ensure lesion sampling.
