Purpose
Colorectal cancer isa commonly prevalentin the western world. One of the common presentations of the disease is acute colonic obstruction. Colorectal stenting isincreasingly being used as bridge to surgery or to palliate obstructive symptoms. It is carried out generally by Gastrointestinal Surgeons and Physicians endoscopically,
or by a Radiologists using fluoroscopic guidance.
We analysed our results of the procedure carried out by multidisciplinary team as a combined approach.
Methods and Materials
A list of patients who underwent colorectal stenting was obtained from radiology information (RIS) system.
Patient records were retrospectively analysed for demographic details,
indications,
procedural details,
type of stents,
outcome and screening time.
Results
Eighty-onecolorectal stent procedures were performed between October 2006 and October 2012. Allprocedures were carried out inradiology department as combined endoscopic and fluoroscopic approach by a Colorectal Surgeon and a Radiologist. Five Colorectal Surgeons were involved in the series, with one Radiologist for all cases. Age ranged between 56 and 98 years.Thirty procedures were performed as emergency for acute obstruction,
6 for locally advanced fistulating tumours,
11 as bridge to surgery and 34 for obstructive symptoms. Covered ComVi colonic stent (Taewoong Medical,Korea) was used for fistulating tumours...
Conclusion
Our technical and clinical success rates are comparable to the available published literature. Combined approach is a safe and efficient way of carrying out colonic stenting with better screening time compared to the fluoroscopy alone.
