Aims and objectives
To evaluate the added value of one-view Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) when combined with two-view Digital Mammography (DM) in modification of BIRADS assessment and follow-up management.
Methods and materials
From February 2014 to December2014,
129 patients (mean age 51.39) underwent one-view DBT and two-view DM,
the one-view DBT was acquired with Siemens Mammomat Inspiration unit.
with respectively 15 and 10 years experience in breast imaging,
independently reviewed the exams in two steps: DM and DM+DBT.
DM and DM+DBT were classified according to BIRADS rate.
Patients with BIRADS 0,
4 and 5 were recalled for work-up.
The concordance of BIRADS rate and the recall rate between the...
DM+DBT significantly increased the number of BIRADS 1,
2 and 5 ,
and reduced the number of BIRADS 0 and 3 of both readers when compared to DM alone (Reader 1: Tab.
1; Reader 2: Tab.2).
DM+DBT also significantly reduced the recall rate for both Reader 1 (DM 78.3% vs DM + DBT46.5%,
1) and Reader 2 (DM 95.3% vs DM + DBT50.4%,
Tab.2). The concordance between the readers for the BIRADS classification was moderate (k=0.35) for DM and substantial (k=0.67) for DM+DBT,
Tab.3. DM+DBT also improved...
The combination of two-view DM and one-view DBT increased the concordance between the readers for the BIRADS classification,
but there was no significant difference regarding the recall rate in our preliminary study.
However adding breast tomosynthesis to mammography increased the number of BIRADS 1 and 2 and reduced the number of BIRADS 0 and 3 for both readers,
reducing the overall recall for additional imaging and short-interval follow-up.
