Learning objectives
After reviewing this exhibition,
the radiologist should become more familiar with hydatid disease and its multiple imaging appearances and will be able to identifythe typical radiographic features.
Background
Hydatidosis is a parasitic infection which is spread worldwide and iscaused by Echinococcus granulosus and rarely by Echinococcus multilocularis.
Humans are an accidentaldeadendintermediate hosts for the parasite who can acquire the disease ingesting contaminated food or handling sick animals.
The diagnosis requires inmunological test and imaging techniques which usually confirm the clinical suspicion.
Findings and procedure details
We retrospectively reviewed the patients with proven hydatid disease between 2009-2014in our institution.
From a total of 52 patients,
we selected the images that bestdefined the typical features of the disease,
in order to describe radiological findings.
Hydatid cysts are most commonly found in liver (up to 80% of the cases) followed by lungs.
Echinococcal disease in other unusual locations can be a diagnosticchallenge.

Conclusion
Hydatidosis is a dynamic entity whose manifestations are different depending on several factors such as the lesion evolutionary stage,
the presence of complications and theaffected organ.
The echinococcal disease in unusual locations can be difficult to diagnose.
Radiologists should be able to recognize it and bear hydatidosis en mind in cysticlesions in any location of the body,
especially in patients from endemic areas.
Imaging tests are useful for diagnosis,
surgery planning and followup.
