Learning objectives
Wereview the classification and etiology of meningiomas and other meningeal tumors,
its clinical presentation and imaging features,
focusing on significant findings.
The atypical imaging findings are correlated with histological patterns.
Based on presented imaging studies and literature review the authors discuss relevant findings which can direct to further investigations and/or correlate to poor prognosis.
Background
Meningothelial tumors or meningiomas belong to a broad group of extra-axial intracranial neoplasms named meningeal tumors and arise from the arachnoid cap cell that are believed to be of neural crest origin.
Meningiomas are the most common intracranial neoplasm with a incidence of 2.6 per 100.000 in general population and represent 25% of all new brain tumor diagnoses per year.
Their female preponderance is not present in pediatric and young adults meningiomas.

including genetic factors and local irradiation.

Findings and procedure details
The authors did a retrospective review of imaging findings in patients under fourty diagnosed with intracranial meningioma that underwent surgical excision in our institution during a period of four years (2010-2013).
We found 18 cases,
9 females and e 9 males,
4 infra-tentorial and 13 supra-tentorial,
and in one case the mass was infra and supra-tentorial.
In respect to the histologic grade we found 12 meningiomas grade I,
5 grade II and one grade III.

Conclusion
Meningiomas are rare tumors in young adults,
and some data suggest that meningiomas arising in younger adults are more aggressive.
Imaging studies provide signs which predict or correlate with biologic behavior / grade,
such as calcification,
density / MR sign,
heterogeneous pattern of enhancement (cysts / tumoral necrosis),
irregular shape/ brain invasion,
edema expression ( volume and higher grade),
hyperostosis / osteolysis.
