Aims and objectives
Distal basilar artery aneurysms are the aneurysms of the basilar artery tip,
junction of the basilar artery with the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) and junction of the basilar artery with the superior cerebellar artery (SCA).
Basilar tip aneurysms represents 5% of all intracranial aneurysms and 50% of the posterior circulation aneurysms {1},
superior cerebellar artery aneurysms represent < 2% of all intracranial aneurysms {2} and posterior cerebral artery aneurysms are very rare,
representing < 1% of all intracranial aneurysms {3}.
Clipping of posterior circulation aneurysms...

Patient Population :
From 2010 till 2015,
30 cases of distal basilar artery aneurysms were treated by endovascular embolization with GDCs at the Neuroradiology Department of Zurich university hospital.
Twenty-one patients (70%) were women,
and 9 patients (30%) were men.
Mean age of the patients was 61.3 years (range,
47-83 years).
The age distribution included 10 patients (33.33%) between 47 and 55 years old,
9 patients (30%) between 56 and 65 years old and 11 patients (36.67%) older than 65 years old.
The majority was...
Results
Immediate Anatomical Results:
All aneurysms were successfully treated through endovascular coil embolization using simple coiling technique and multiple microcatheters technique.
As shown in Table (2) and Figure (3),
the immediate anatomical results showed complete occlusion in 22 aneurysms (73.34%).
Immediate Clinical Results:
As shown in Table (2),
2 cases (6.67%) showed thromboembolic events intraoperatively treated with eptifibatide with no clinical impact.
These 2 aneurysms were of wide neck and were treated with multiple microcatheter technique.
1 case (3.33%) treated by simple coiling showed vasospasm with...
Conclusion
In our series,
using simple coiling and multiple microcatheters technique in endovascular treatment of distal basilar artery aneurysms showed satisfactory immediate and follow-up anatomical and clinical results.
In the immediate anatomical results,
96.67% of the treated aneurysms showed complete occlusion or neck remnant.
In the longterm anatomical results,
80% showed complete occlusion or neck remnant.
No morbidity or mortality was related to the operative technique in the immediate and long term clinical results.
Our results showed that coiling is safe and effective with less morbidity...
