Purpose
Quantify scatter radiation exposure on patients and staff during mobile x-ray examinations to patients
Methods and materials
This is a quantitative correlational study.
The population consists of non-transportable patients admittedat a large public hospital with a sample of 199 x-rays performed.
A full body phantom was used to quantify scatter radiation.
Three configurations were used: anteroposterior (AP) incidence of the chest,
with the phantom in the supine position and semi-sitting,
and the tangential abdomen.
The AP incidence of chest in the supine position (configuration 1),
the phantom was positioned in the supine position under the litter,
the image plate (IP) under the...
Results
Scattered radiation in function of voltage
Thechange between 77 and 81 kVp may be due the transition betweenthe Compton effect and photoelectric effect.
Voltage and exposure were correlated and linear regression analysis confirmed that theradiationsecondary is directly proportional to the voltage(R = 0.9994) (Figure 1).
Scattered radiation in function of the current-time product
The variation of the scattered radiation is similar for both configurationsbecause itincreases with the increase of the current-time product (Figure 2).
The correlation between the scattered radiation and the current-time product showed...
Conclusion
Mobile x-rays on patients do not breachdose limits established by the national law,
provided that the individuals stay more than 1 m away from the center of the exposure field and measures of radiological protection are applied.
