Learning objectives 1.To produce highly detailed didactic images and anatomical schemes 2. To present ‘ticks and tips’ helping to obtain highly diagnostic images and understand anatomy 3. To describe the proper scanning technique and make a proposal of easy-to-follow check-list protocol
The recent technological advances in software and hardware of ultrasound equipment have improved the possibilities of ultrasound in ankle assessment,
and modern equipment allows an accurate depiction of anatomical structures.
Most of the anatomical structures in this area are situated superficially,
therefore advantages of using the highest frequencies can be applied.
Findings and procedure details
Around the ankle joint there are numerous structures that can be visualized during the ultrasound examination.
Usually the examination is focused on one or two of compartments (anterior,
medial) based on clinical question/symptoms. Knowledge of exact location of linear structures like tendons,
vessels and nerves on the transverse plain is crucial in effective ultrasound examination of the ankle. LATERAL COMPARTMENT Anterior talofibular ligament Anterior tibiofibular...
1. High-resolution ultrasound of the ankle is a safe,
and cost-effective method in evaluation of ankle structures. 2. Knowledge of anatomy is essential for scanning the ankle accurately and efficiently. 3. Clear check-list protocol and educational presentations with didactic images and schemes can be a useful tools in everyday practice.
