Learning objectives
Revise different surgical approaches for renal cell tumors.
Discuss postoperative MDCT acquisition protocols.
Review normal and pathologic changes after surgery.
Background
Imaging methods are employed more frequently for different causes,
therefore kidneys are more commonly imaged.
This leads to early detection and diagnosis of kidney lesions.
Up to 50% of renal lesions are diagnosed incidentally.
Usually they are not very large and susceptible for nephron sparing surgical techniques and this has minimized secondary impairment of renal function.
We retrospectively revised 44 renal cell tumors diagnosed at our center.
30 radical and 14 partial nephrectomies were performed.
Most common tumor was clear cell carcinoma followed by papillary...

SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
For patients with localized RCC and in some cases with advanced RCC surgery can be curative.
Election of surgery procedure will depend on multiple factors: tumor characteristics,
patient condition,
multiple or bilateral tumors,
solitary kidney,
history of hereditary cancer syndromes...
Surgeon experience and center characteristics are also important aspects.
Radical nephrectomy or nephron sparing surgery can be performed with similar oncologic outcomes.
Radical nephrectomy (RN)
Resection of Gerota´s fascia and its entire contents including the kidney,
perinephric fat and lymphatics,
and ocasionally ipsilateral...
Conclusion
Renal cancer tumor is a frequent pathology that usually requires surgical treatment.
Radiologists need to be acquainted with surgical techniques and clinical scenarios to perform an adequate postsurgical MDCT protocol and obtain its maximum information.
Normal findings and complications that can be found in this setting will be reviewed.
