Peritoneal spaces and ligaments are frequently affected by infectious,
inflammatory,
traumatic and neoplastic diseases.
An accurate knowledge of peritoneal anatomy and diseases is essential to provide the diagnosis.
Recognizing the peritoneal anatomy and its imaging findings may assist in the detection and characterization of peritoneal diseases.
In addition itmay explain how neoplastic disease and other pathologic processes spread.
The diagnosis of a peritoneal process can be challenging and often different diseases result in a similar spectrum of changes.

1.PERITONEAL CAVITY
1.1.
The peritoneal cavity is divided into interconnecting spaces,
the supramesocolic and inframesocolic spaces and the pelvic cavity.
1.1.1.
Supramesocolic compartment
(intraperitoneal spaces above the transverse colon)
- contains -
stomach
liver
spleen
Further,
the supramesocolic space is arbitrarily subdivided into right and left supramesocolic spaces.

Right subphrenic space (Fig.1)
Hepatorenal space (Morison's pouch) (Fig.2)
Lesser sac (Fig.3)
The left supramesocolic space has two subspaces:
Left perihepatic space

Conclusion
The knowledge of peritoneal spaces and ligaments plays an essential role in determining the etiology and extension of peritoneal diseases.
Along with the clinical data,
it can reduce the list of differential diagnosis and in some cases provide a specific diagnosis.
