Aims and objectives

Computed tomography (CT) is an essential modality in radiology. Theoretical inputs and practical in-house training in CT, followed by clinical internship are part of the radiological technology bachelor `s degree program. A special modular lecture program in CT has been implemented. (Fig.1) The technical implementation of the CT post-processing in-house training is based on a server-client concept. Two server-based rendering (SBR) systems from different manufacturers are used to independently get learning outcomes. All needed applications and advanced image processing tools are available in both systems....

Methods and materials

In September 2017 fifty-six students of the third and fifth semesters of the bachelor’s degree program, Radiological Technology at the University of Applied Sciences FH CAMPUS WIEN participated in this study. Participants were allocated to three groups, 3rd semester students, who had not started the CT internship (group A), 3rd students, who had already finished the CT internship (group B), and 5th semester students, who had finished the CT internship one year ago (group C). Results

A group of 56 students was involved in this study and finished the questionnaire. Figure three illustrates demographic data of the students. 20 3rd semester students (35.7%), without CT internship (group A), 22 3rd semester students (39.3%), who had already finished the CT internship (group B), 14 5th semester students (25%), who had done CT internship one year ago (group C), participated in the study. Conclusion

Radiographers are the professionals in charge of performing computed tomography examinations. Specialized knowledge regarding technical, medical, and scientific aspects is essential for practical implementation. In-house lab trainings with multi-modality workplaces facilitate improving practical skills. The presented modular lecture concept of CT in combination with in-house lab training qualifies radiography students to deal with complex situations in practical placements. Basic knowledge for recurrent clinical exercises facilitates further competence gain.
