Learning objectives
Over the last decade several scoring systems have been proposed for accurate sonographic characterization of thyroid nodules so as to determine risk of malignancy and avoid unnecessary interventions.
Nevertheless,
risk stratification of malignancy in thyroid nodules remains a challenge on imaging.
Describe thyroid nodules according to the TIRADS,
K-TIRADS,
U-System,
EU-TIRADS TMC-RSS and ACR-TIRADS published lexicon with relevant images,
explaining the underlying pathophysiology.

Background
A number of qualitative and quantitative ultrasound (US) risk stratification systems for thyroid nodules are being used all over the world,
new ones are being devised but so far,
no consensus on a single system has emerged.
Efforts by the worldwide medical community involved in the management of thyroid nodules are converging toward US risk stratification systems,
which could provide a high-sensitivity and high-negative predictive value (NPV) for the diagnosis of clinically significant thyroid carcinomas.
In this exhibit,
we review the fascinating journey of thyroid...
Findings and procedure details
The exhibit will
Describe thyroid nodules according to the TIRADS,
K-TIRADS,
U-System,
EU-TIRADS and ACR-TIRADS published lexicon with relevant images,
explaining the underlying pathophysiology.
Current thyroid nodule scoring system and recommendation guidelines for each category.
Salient features of each system and distinguishing points from the current 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines.
Interactive quiz involving identification of imaging features,
categorization and management recommendations.
Also,
discussion of certain practical problems faced in day to day practice,
like reassuring an anxious patient.
Conclusion
Ultrasound is an important tool for thyroid cancer surveillance and aids in the detection,
localization,
and planning of revision surgery for recurrent/persistent disease.
Introducing scoring system can be the first step in standardizing reporting lexicon allowing effective communication between the Radiologists,
Pathologists and Clinicians.
