Learning objectives
We present a pictorial review of various complications related to percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (pRFA) in treatment of renal masses – and tips on how to avoid these.
Background
Our institution is the 2ndlongest running RFA service within the UK.
We present retrospective data having reviewed cases for complications in >150 patients,
who underwent percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (pRFA) for renal masses in lastfive years. We recorded demographic data,
various complications includinghemorrhage,
renal vascular injury,
urothelial injury,
pain,
pelvicalyceal leakage,
arteriovenous malformation,
infection,
bowel injury,
pneumothorax,
skin burn,
nerve injury,
tract seeding and miscellaneous complications and will be compared with published scientific data.
Percutaneous radiofrequencyablationof small renal lesions is an evolving technique gaining popularity around the...
Findings and procedure details
The overall complication rate at ourhospital was 13% with major complication rate of 4.6% (Fig 16),
which is comparible with literature which shows complication rate of 8 to 13% with major complication rates of 4 to 6%.7,11
The most frequent complication remains hemorrhage involving the collecting system.
Second,
most common complication is ureteral strictures followed by urine leaks.
Pain and paranesthesia are also reported inone patient,
which was likely not related to RFA procedure.
The society of interventional radiology has divided the complications into major...
Conclusion
There are small numbers of complications associated with percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (pRFA) of renal mass and majority of them were minor,
which only required observation.
