Learning objectives
To demonstrate skull base anatomy and numerous tumors types arise in the skull base.
To demonstrate the lesion location,
extension,
perineural spread,
staging,
pre-operative planning and to identify the recurrences on follow up.
Background
Skull base is divided into three
• Anterior Skull Base
• Middle Skull Base
• Posterior Skull Base
Skull base forms the junction of brain and face,
neck.
Numerous neurovascular structures enter and exit the skull base.
• Skull base tumors arise from the skull base itself or intra/extracranial structures encroaching the skull base.
• Based on the clinical diagnosis,
imaging features,
location in the skull base we are able to arrive at the appropriate diagnosis,
which is later confirmed on histopathology.
Anterior Skull Base...
Findings and procedure details
• CT is the imaging modality for bony anatomy and in detecting fibro osseous lesions,
calcification,
sclerosis,
periosteal reaction,
bone destruction.
• MRI helps in tissue characterization and detection of perineural spread.
• In addition PET CT plays an important role in detecting distant metastasis,
staging and lesion extension especially for tumors arising from neural crest stem cells.
Common Pathologies in Skull base:
• Anterior Skull Base
• Sino nasal malignancy
• Esthesioneuroblastoma
• Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma
• Middle Skull Base
• Pituitary adenoma
•...
Conclusion
•Clinical history,
location in skull base,
Imaging features with histological diagnosis plays a crucial role in detecting,
diagnosing,
surgical planning and monitoring response to therapy.
