Learning objectives
To determine the imaging modality of choice for assessment of the malignant lymph nodes of different regions of the body.
To differentiate between metastatic and lymphomatous lymph nodes.
To overview the nodal aspect of TNM staging of common malignancies by region
To discuss the role of PET scan in lymph node assessment
Background
The lymphatic system is a network of organs,
vessels and lymph nodes situated throughout the body.
Accordingly,
radiologist will encounter them in each study in their daily practice.
Giving the fact that LNs form a network connecting them to all body organs,
this makes them one of the major cancer spread routes.
Lymphatic spread is usually stepwise,
which allow us to learn about the disease nature and predict the way of tumor progression,
hence awareness with the normal lymph node radiological appearance and its suspicious...
Findings and procedure details
Lymph node assessment has always been a challenge for radiologist for proper assessment and staging of malignant diseases and this include different ways using different imaging modalities.
General Lymph nodes assessment
Morphological criteria that can be useful for nodal assessment include [1]:
1.
Nodal size:
Lymph nodes size assessed in the axial short-axis.
This assessment methodhas limited accuracyand can't differentiate enlarged hyperplastic benign from malignant lymph nodes.
So lymph node size alone is not a reliable parameter [1].
2.Nodal shape (round or elliptical)
Normally the...
Conclusion
Radiological assessment of lymph nodes by different modalities and classfication systems has a very crucial role in proper diagnosis and management of many malignant neoplastic disease.
