Learning objectives
The purpose of our educational exhibit is to:
Review and illustrate thoracic vascular variants and anomalies.
Discuss the clinical relevance of their diagnosis and adequate report.
Background
Incidental findings of vascular anatomic variants on chest imaging are found with relative frequency and may sometimes cause confusion,
leading to misdiagnosis or to more invasive complementary exams.
Findings and procedure details
Based on chest-xray and specially on computer tomography and magnetic resonance,
we’ll describe most common variants of the aortic arch branching,
superior and inferior vena cava variants,
aberrant subclavian arteries as well as variants of pulmonary arteries,
pulmonary venous drainage,
azygous system,
arteriovenous malformations,
aortic coarctation,
lobar sequestration and others.
Additionally,
we’ll differentiate those who are indolent or non-relevant from those with clinical impact,
causing symptoms or increasing risk of complications in interventional procedures,
some of them requiring surgical treatment.
We prepared thefollowing figures for...
Conclusion
Familiarity with the gamut of imaging appearance ofthoracic vascular variants allows a precise diagnosis,
avoiding confusions,
diagnostic errors,
unnecessary complementary exams and potential complications in interventional procedures.
