Aims and objectives
Supraspinatus tendon is part of the rotator cuff of the shoulder and it is responsible for abduction of the upper limb(1).A tear or rupture of the tendon of the supraspinatus muscle can occur in 2 ways; either partial or full thickness tear and most of the time it is accompanied with another rotator cuff muscle tear but it is the most commonly injured(2).A partial tear means that the tendon fibers will not be completely disrupted yet a complete tear is the disruption of all tendon...
Methods and materials
Patient population: In this prospective study 10 active men and women between 40 and 55 years of age with primary,
traumatic,
or degenerative supraspinatus tendon tears proved by MRI(Figure 1) and ultrasound examination(Figure 2) within 18 months of initial diagnosis were included between September 2017 and march 2018.
Exclusion criteria were: Supraspinatus full thickness tendon tear,
prior surgical repair,
revision arthroscopy,
pre-existing conditions associated with upper extremity pain including carpal tunnel syndrome,
cervical neuropathy or any other nerve pathologies,
local malignancy,
and systemic or bleeding...
Results
For the whole study group members:an exploratory analysis of SPADI scores prior to the procedure,
at 6 weeks,
and at 3 months after the procedure included data of only eligible patients.
Data of 10 patients were analyzed.
The total scoring difference between pre-injection and post-injection SPADI scores washighly statistically significant (P < 0.001) at 6 weeks and 3 months (Table 1,
Figure 5).A statistically significant improvement of the total scores and their percentages should be concluded from the following scores.
They showed remarkable drop from...
Conclusion
The purpose of the study was to assess the efficacy of PRP injection in Supraspinatus partial tendon tear cases. Our study showed remarkably noticeable change on comparing the pre-injection and post-injection SPADI scoring system at 6 weeks and 3 months.
There is highly statistically significant pain and disability score and percentage improvement.
Although the limitation of the study werethe relatively small number of the studied population with the need to involve larger number of patients in future studies for the validation of our findings.
Also,
some...
