Aims and objectives
WHO states that around 50 million people in the whole world are suffering from dementia with an increase of 10 million cases every year.[1] Dementia is a common neurodegenerative disorder which is generally found in people above 55 years of agewhich causes progressive deterioration of cognitive domains which includes executive function,
attention etc.
and decline in cognitive ability to perform daily activitiesover a period of time which is not part of the normal aging. The common cause for dementia is degeneration ofneurons which causes loss of...
Methods and materials
Patient Population: A perspective study of 80 subjects was done with in age group of 40-90 years of age.
This study population comprised of both normal i.e.
subjects without any major illness; and subjects with complaints of memory loss.
Among this population two subsets were made according to the age distribution.
Subset A comprised of subjects between age group of 40-65 years and Subset B comprised of subjects between age group of 65-90.
3D MRI Scan was performed for all the 80 subjects.
Data Acquisition:...
Results
Total 80 subjects were taken of which 6 were discarded. Volumetric analysis of74 subjects were performed.
Subset A and B had total 39 and 35 subjests respectively (Fig.2).
Linear regression between age (40-90) and age expected atrophy percentage had a negative slope of -6.00 +- 2.17 with p-value < 0.0001 and 95% confidence interval (Fig.1).
Between groups it was observed that subset A had higher atrophic changes than subset B even after normalization of brain volumes with estimated intracranial volumes(eICV) and age (Fig.3 & 4)....
Conclusion
The result suggests that atrophy percentage in the taken population had negative correlation with the age showing subset A (age 40-65) having higher atrophy percentage than subset B (age 65-90) when normalized to their age and eICV.
Neuroshield was able to detect atrophic changes as low as 0.55% and at the earliest age of 41 years.
This study highlights that atrophic changes related to dementia are age independent and volumetry can help detect it at its earliest.
