Background/introduction
in 2013: Spanish Health Ministry organized a National "Not-to-do" campaing ,
wit all the National Scientific Comitees involved,
asking them to select at least 5 Recommendations in order to implent tem in our Health System.
Our SERAM (Spanish Society of Medical Radiology) not onlyundettok this project,
but due to the intrinsic nature of our Specialty with the ionizing radiations that our medical activity is mostly based on,
took the lead in the developement of a Guide with 38 Recommendations of "Not-to-do",
aligned with other International...
Description of activity and work performed
-ARPA (Asturian Radiology Association) chose 3 Recommendations,
in the context in the EMERGENCY ROOM (ER):
NOT-to-do head X-ray study in trauma cases (no non-accidental trauma)*
NOT-to-do pelvic X-ray study in polytrauma protocol patient
NOT-to-do "routine" decubitus-erect abdomen X-ray study in acute abdomen not suspected of obstruction/perforation
-WHERE DO WE PART??: Data was analyzed from January-June 2018 in each of the 8 regional hospitals for each X-ray study
- Working on RESULTS:
80-85%of the performed abdomen Xray studies were not necessary
Head and pelvic x-ray studies...
Conclusion and recommendations
Getting Real: improvements,
culture of safety,...need to go from up to down!
And once down...
Theory plus
real data baseline
plus how-to-do-it/tools
plus logical reasons "why" plus
emporwerment /culture of safety plus
posterior feedback: positive results.
