Background/introduction

Historically, accreditation has been a powerful tool to distinguish leading imaging departments. In Greece the “Hellenic Accreditation System” is the authority recognized to accredit Medical Imaging departments according to the international standards ELOT EN ISO 15189:2012 and ELOT EN ISO / IEC 17025:2005, regardless of the number of their staff members and / or the extent of imaging activities. Description of activity and work performed

Preparations for the accreditation procedure had started since 2014. Department head formed a group of motivated personnel from the radiology department staff (radiologists, medical physicists, radiographers and nurses) who undertook specific responsibilities in the different tasks of the project. An advisory company was also selected by the administration, to guide the procedures under the supervision of the “quality office” of the hospital. Conclusion and recommendations

Since the accreditation of our department and the implementation of quality management procedures, several improvements were noticed: a. Patients and personnel satisfaction was higher. b. Best practices concerning the use of imaging services were better understood and implied by referring physicians. c. Staff was motivated towards continuous training and compliance to job description in accordance to new duties. d. Hospital manager and officers of the ministry of health used our radiology department as a “paradigm” for the better use of hospital resources and improved quality...
