Purpose
Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the third most common acute cardiovascular disease next to myocardial infarction and stroke1.A large academic study 2showed that the number of CTPA performed for suspected had increased considerably, with meanwhile decrease in number of Perfusion scan and pulmonary angiography. Nowadays the CTPA is considered as the investigation of choice for suspected PE 3. The diagnostic accuracy of CTPA for PE up to segmental level is very high, with sensitivity ranging from 90–100 and specificity of 89–94% keeping pulmonary angiography as gold...
Methods and materials
The study was done in the Radiology department with the permission of the ethical committee. All these studies are performed with a 128 row Toshiba Aquilion CT scanner. Iodine based contrast media is used as contrast media through a 18 to 20 G IV catheter in the right ante-cubital vein. Contrast is injected though a double chamber power injector with a flow rate of 4-5ml/sec12 followed by a saline chaser. Bolus tracking method is used using ROI on the main pulmonary artery. Randomly 100 cases...
Results
The results revealed that 60% patients were female and rest were male. With age raging from early 20’s to late 80’s. The maximum patients (n=38) were in the age category between 41-60 years. Acute pulmonary embolism was diagnosed in only15 cases. In 12% of cases the enhancement of pulmonary trunk was below 211 HU, hence were unsatisfactory scans.

Conclusion
CTPA is an imaging of choice for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism if properly done.
Discussion:
CT pulmonary angiography has become the investigation for choice for suspected pulmonary embolism2.It is non-invasive, quick, sensitive, and specific as compared to other modalities. The problem with CTPA is that a percentage of scans are inconclusive for some of the reasons. The common ones are motion artefacts are the other is inadequate opacificaiton of main pulmonary outflow tract (MPOT), which should be at least more than 211HU. No more...
