Learning objectives
The purpose of our educational exhibit is a new didactic approach to show US-MRI anatomy of the wrist,
with educational videos and images.
Background
The wrist is one of the most complex joints in the body and the knowledge of wrist’s anatomy is essential to understand pathologic conditions of this joint.
Fusion imaging US- MRI could represent a new frontier in musculoskeletal US teaching.
Fusion imaging US- MRI can be helpful to study bones,
tendons,
ligaments and nerves anatomy at the same time,
using US high- resolution and MRI panoramic view.
Findings and procedure details
Hardware and software used:
-Esaote MyLab Twice ultrasound scanner with a virtual navigator software
-Magnetic position sensor linked to the US transducer (13 MHz) and low magnetic field transmitter (Fig.
1)
-MRI system (Siemens Aera 1,5T) and DICOM images
-Internal anatomical markers --> bony landmarks (Fig.

Examined joint: one health wrist (27 yo woman)

US examination of the dorsal aspect of the wrist:
-Carpal joints and MCP joint (Fig.

Conclusion
This new application of pre-existing techniques is useful for radiologists in training and for who wants to approach musculoskeletal anatomy learning both US and MRI at the same time.
A thorough knowledge of the anatomy is important to enable the musculoskeletal radiologist to make an accurate and useful diagnosis of wrist’s pathologies.
Furthermore,
US-MRI fusion imaging could be a promising technique particularly in interventional procedures.
