Learning objectives
To provide a comprehensive review of the common and more unusual pathologies affecting thepaediatric skull and scalp,
emphasising the key imaging features.
Background
Children presenting with a scalp or skull mass form an important part of paediatric neuroradiologypractice.
Early diagnosis of these lesions and accurate characterisation is an essential part of theirtreatment pathway.
However,
establishing the definite diagnosis on a radiological basis is often challenging and requiresa multimodality approach,
with plain radiographs (XR),
ultrasound (US),
computed tomography (CT)and magnetic resonance (MR)imagingall playing a role.
Findings and procedure details
The characteristic imaging features of a wide range of scalp and skull lesions are illustrated across arange of imaging modalities.
Parietal Foramina
Background:
Congenital calvarial defects whichare a result of delayed/incomplete ossification of the parietal bones,
specifically around the parietal notch
Typically,
they appear as a pair of lucencies within the parietal bone,
close to the intersection of the sagittal and lambdoid sutures.
Occasionally,
there can be associated meningeal,
cortical or vascular malformations which can act as an epileptogenic focus.

Conclusion
The diverse pathological conditions giving rise to paediatric skull and scalp masses are reflected inthe wide range of clinical presentations and the need for a multimodality imaging approach.
Having an understanding of the key imaging findings associated with each pathology can aid theradiologist in providing an accurate diagnosis,
and allows prompt and accurate management.
This educational exhibit will provide the basis for such knowledge in a simple and concise format.
