Learning objectives
To discuss about indications of Image guided Regional Nerve Blocks in Intervention Radiology procedures
To learn utility and techniques of Image guided Regional Nerve Blocks
To discuss advantages & complications of Image guided Regional Nerve Blocks in Interventional Radiological Procedures
Background
The Interventional Radiology procedures being done are becoming increasingly complex and diverse ;coupled with it is the requirement for proper sedation and analgesia for the procedures .
Since interventional radiologists are often responsible for sedation in most IR procedures,
having expertise and skills in this area is necessary.
One of the Prime objective of Minimally Invasive Interventional Radiological treatments should be to make them as comfortable and painless as possible.
Among various options available (Local anaesthesia,
general Anaesthesia ,
Epidural Anaesthesia etc ) to achieve...
Findings and procedure details
What is Regional Analgesia ?
" Injection of local anaesthetic agent near a nerve or group of nerves in order to inhibit autonomic ,
motor or sensory (or all) impulse transmission through it"
Area affected depends upon where is Local Anaesthetic agent is injected along the nerve course .
the onset and duration of block depend upon both the type of nerve block and LA agent used .
What is Mechanism of action of Local Anaesthetic ?
LA agents work by binding to Sodium Channels...
Conclusion
Image guided peripheral Nerve Blocks are highly safe and effective techniques of Analgesia in Various Interventional Radiological procedures.
They can be easily administered by treating Interventional Radiologist.
All Interventional Radiologists should have sound knowledge of these techniques which will further help in exploring more opportunities to employ their use.
