Learning objectives
The aim of this presentation is to shed light on the difference between the adoption and coexistence of a new technique for localizing impalpable breast lesions with magnetic seeds,
and to share our experience after a year's use.
To describe how the seeds are inserted by stereotaxy (with the Affirm® system from Hologic® at mammography) and with ultrasound.
Background
Breast cancer represents around 28.5% of all cancers diagnosed in women worldwide.
In Spain about 32,825 new breast cancers are diagnosed every year and in 2017,
4,516 new cases were registered in our autonomous region.
According to data from this period,
the participation in the PDPCM (Programme for Early Detection of Breast Cancer) was around 83.8%,
covering 89.6% of our county's population.
Wire marker placement is the commonest method for locating impalpable breast lesions preoperatively.
It may cause inconvenience,
such as the "accordion effect",

Findings and procedure details
The insertion of seeds is carried out through two different imaging techniques,
as follows.
Ultrasound-guided seed insertion
We use a Canon medical ultrasound,
model Aplio a450.
We emphasize that one of the advantages of Endomag needles is their high echogenicity,
which eases the visualization of the very needle,
as well as the ultrasound procedure itself.
The patient is prepared,
the procedure explained,
and the material for marking is prepared.

Conclusion
After one year's experience with this new technique,
we may affirm that it is easier to manage,
easier to carry out,
and gives satisfying results.
In our particular case,
travel to other medical centers is avoided,
the whole procedure being carried out in our hospital. The experience as lived by our patients is also less stressfulthanks to its limited invasivenessand the non-radioactive nature of the magnetic seeds.
