To describe the imaging features of hydatid disease in various anatomic locations.
Multimodality imaging techniques( USG,
CT,
and MRI) and familiarity with imaging findings provides an important advantages in making the diagnosisof hydatid disease.
Background
There are two types ofEchinococcusinfections.
E.
Granulosisis the more common type,
whereas
E.
Multilocularisis less common but more invasive,
mimicking a malignancy.
Hydatid disease (HD) continues to be a significant health problem in areas where animal husbandry is commonly practiced.
Hydatid cysts (HCs) can be solitary or multiple.
Chest radiography (CXR),
ultrasonography (USG),
computed tomography (CT),
magnetic resonance (MR) imaging,
and even urography can depict HCs.
The imaging method used depends on the involved organ and the growth stage of the cyst.

Findings and procedure details
Cross-sectional imaging modalities,
including ultrasonography,
magnetic resonance (MR) imaging,
and computed tomography,
are useful in evaluatingthe various sites of involvement and radiological appearancesof the hydatid disease.
The liver was the most frequent site involved.
Other sites in their descending order ofoccurrence are:
Pulmonary hydatid infection: second most common organ
Splenic hydatid infection
CNS hydatid infection
Spinal hydatid infection
Retroperitoneal hydatid infection
Renal hydatid infection
Musculoskeletal hydatid infection

Conclusion
Hydatid Disease is a dynamic entity with varying imaging appearances.
It can arise in any part of the body the bloodstream reaches.
Familiarity with imaging findings,
especially in patients living in countries where this disease is endemic,
provides important advantages in making the diagnosis.
Despite the characteristic imaging findings,
HD in unusual anatomic locations may make differential diagnosis difficult,
even in patients from endemic regions.
However,
HC should always be kept in mind when a cystic lesion is encountered anywhere in the body.
