Aims and objectives
To assess diagnostic accuracy of imaging guided percutaneous core biopsy (PB) and open biopsy (OB) in patients with suspected musculoskeletal tumors
To assess accuracy in classifying lesions as benign or malignant,
in specifying exact pathology and grade.
Methods and materials
Prospectively,
were evaluated 73 patients with suspected musculoskeletal tumor.
All patients underwent imaging guided percutaneous biopsy (PB): Ultrasound or computed tomography by musculoskeletal radiologist in consultation with orthopedic oncologistfor interventianal approach.
After providing the histological diagnosis an open biopsy was done by ortopedic oncologist.
Surgical removal of the lesion wos done within a week.
Patients were categorized by biopsy type,
tissue type,
and tumor type.
Gold standard was histological diagnosis provided from surgical speciment.
Ultrasound guide percutaneous biopsy was done in 58 pts (79.5%) and...
Results
Out of the 73 patients,
38 (52.1%) were men and 35 (47.9%) women.
The mean age was 41year with age range from 8 to 84 years.
Soft tissue tumors (STT) were 51 (69.9%) and bone tumors (BT) 22 (30.1%) cases.
Benign tumor was found in 46 (63%),
primary malignant tumor in 17 (23.3%),
metastatic tumor in 7(9.6%),
and non-neoplastic processes in 3(4.1%) cases.
There was no significant difference between STT and BT regarding the nature of the lesion.
Nondiagnosticof Percutaneous Biopsy were 12 cases (16.4%):...
Conclusion
Diagnosis of tumors on imaging guided PB is accurate in classifying lesions as benign or malignant
OB has higher accuracy in specifying histology and grade.
Therefore PB is informative enough to support direct clinical treatment,
without performing OB.
