Purpose
To recall Dr. Pablo Mirizzi's original report of intraoperative colangiography in 1934 and to show the imaging findings of benign compression of the bile duct, also known as Mirizzi's Syndrome. (Fig. 1)
Methods and Materials
We collected historic information of Dr. Mirizzi's work and life, emphasizing his studies of the pathology of bile ducts, and the description of intraoperative colangiography, still in use. We illustrate the imaging findings using CT, MRI and interventional procedures of benign compression of the bile duct, also known as Mirizzi's sydrome.
Results
His parents had been born in Turin. In Argentina they settled down in the province of Cordoba. They were very humble. Pablo Luis Mirizzi was born in Crdoba on January 25, 1893. He had his preuniversity education at the historic Monserrat National School. (Fig. 2) In 1910 he entered the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Crdoba. He graduated in 1915. Thesis (1916): Cirrhogenous Splenic Anemia In 1919 he obtained a scholarship and travelled to the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic....
Conclusion
The Mirizzigraphy allowed to transform to the biliary surgery into a procedure with scientific bases thanks to iconographic data. It not only discovers calculus before closing the abdominal wall but also removes injuries in the biliary tract. We want to pay tribute to the outstanding medical knowledge of our ancestors. (Fig. 11)
