Purpose
The purpose of the study was to illustrate our experience with an innnovative computer-assisted optical system for CT-guided interventional procedures and suggest the clinical and technical indications for this navigation device.
Methods and Materials
Between June,
16th 2010 and January,
the 22nd 2013,
we experienced the use of a novel optical-guidance computer-assisted system: ActiSight™/CT-guide™ System (Fig.
1).
On a series of 29 patients (10 female,
19 male; mean age: 59.9 ± 13.9 years; range: 25.6-80.9 years) we performed 36 CT-guided interventional procedures: 19 biopsies and 17 radiofrequency ablation procedures (RFA): 23 patients underwent a single procedure,
1 patient had 3 lesions treated with RFA,
3 patients had 2 lesions treated with RFA,

Results
Biopsy procedures (Fig.
9).
Nineteen lesions underwent CT-guided percutaneous biopsy: 14 lung lesions (mean diameter: 31.54 mm; range: 13-80 mm); 1 retroperitoneal lesion (78 mm diameter); 2 mediastinal lesions (70 and 90 mm diameter); 1 adrenal gland lesion (45 mm diameter); and one iliac muscle lesion (50 mm diameter).
One lung lesion (17 mm) was then treated with RFA.
All procedures were technically successful.
Mean procedural time was 42 min (range 12-97 min),
with a mean number of 8.15 CT scans (range: 4-19 scans).

Conclusion
In our experience,
CT-Guide™ navigation system,
offering quantitative and visual informations about the distance to target and deviation from the planned path,
served as an accurate instrument for CT-guided interventional procedures: it was especially useful for hard-to-target lesions,
such as small lesions or lesions in deep or not favorable location (Fig.
13).
The system is not able to correct any breathing movement: at least for lung CT-guided interventional procedures,
CT scans and navigation phase should be performed with the patient in the same breathing phase,...
