Learning objectives
The aim of this study is to review the radiological findings that can be found in patients with extrapulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis,
using different imaging techniques from ultrasonography and intravenous urography up to CT scan.
Background
An estimated 8.6 million people developed TB in 2012.
In spite of the lung being the target organ of tuberculosis,
any other organ and system can be affected,
andthe radiological imaging plays an important role in identifying these patients.
Findings and procedure details
Through a systematic review of cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis confirmed in our hospital in the last 10 years,
we illustrate the most representative confirmed cases and review the radiologic findings of the most common abdominal extrapulmonary affectation.
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
The lymph nodes are the most frequent finding (55-65%) in tuberculous infection.
They can be enlarged with a hypodense center and peripheral enhancement after administration of intravenous contrast,
which may after a certain length of time calcify.
Histoplasmosis may also be associated with these hypodense nodules;...
Conclusion
Normal 0 21 false false false
Approximately 9 million people develop TB each year.
Tuberculosis has shown a resurgence in nonendemic population in recent yeras.
Although lungs are usually the most affected organs,
the disease may also have demonstrations at other levels.
Radiographic findings may look like many other malignancy entities such as inflammatory disorders and other infections,
this is why we must be able to recognize the different manifestations and have a wide suspicion.
Although the diagnosis can only be confirmed by histological examination,...
