Learning objectives
To determine the etiology of acute pancreatitis in paediatric age group
To describe ultrasonography,
computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of acute pancreatitis and compare the diagnostic accuracy of these modalities
To demonstratetypical imaging features of acute pancreatitis in children and discuss complications of the disease.
To mention about the commonly used acute pancreatitis staging systems (revised Atlanta Criteria,
Balthazar,
Computed Tomography Severity Index)
Due to low incidence of the disease in paediatric age group,
evaluation of etiology,
radiologic severity,
and to predict the...
Background
Acute pancreatitis (AP) is defined as acute inflammatory process of pancreatic parenchyma with variable involvement of local tissues and remote organs [8].
It is the most common hepatobiliary cause for hospitalization due to wide range of clinical outcome from transient abdominal tenderness to irreversible systemic complications and sometimes death [9].
Although it is less often in children than adults,
it is the most common disease of pancreas in paediatric age group [10].
Radiologic Grading Systems
Over recent decades,
several scoring systems that include radiologic features...

Patient Data
The archives of the paediatric radiology department were reviewed for AP patients,
documented between 2007 and 2018.
The search yielded 74 patients (32 Male,
42 Female; age of diagnosis ranging between 1-18 years; mean age was 9 ± 4.9 years. We observed slight female preponderance with a ratio of 1.3:1.
The number of hospitalization over the years is shown in Fig. 9.
In recent years,
many studies have drawn attention to the increasing incidence of AP over the years in...
Conclusion
With increasing prevalence over the years and growing treatment opportunities,
recognizing the spectrum of imaging findings of AP and complications is crucial.
Pancreaticobiliary ductal anomalies are the most common cause of AP in children for whom the MRCP were performed.
Initial US has no findings in more than half of the patients (59.5 %) at the time of the onset of AP
CT is more sensitive than US for the diagnosis of AP; however,
it has limited potential for evaluation of biliary ductal system which...
