Purpose
Aim of this study is to evaluate Ultrasound and Whole Body MRI,
in the prevention of sport lesions.
Methods and Materials
We used a Philips 1.5 Tesla MRI machinery with T1 and T2 weighted TSE sequences on the coronal plane and an ultrasound iU22 equipment,
using a 14-17.5 MHz linear probe for the most and a 12MHz linear one,
more seldomly.
We examined thighs at rest and dynamically,
starting with the basic test and completing it with a power Doppler.
Our attention was focused especially on calculating the dimension of muscle disruption,
the amount of intramuscular focal fluids,
when present,
and the extension of the area...
Results
We studied 25 amateur and professional athletes in different sports (soccer,
hockey,
rugby).
The diagnostic evaluation has been carried out on transferring athletes or in the evaluation of the patient,
before returning to his/her sport activity.
We preferred the WBMRI in transferring athletes and in those patients who seemed taking too long to recover from a trauma.
The dynamic ultrasound exam has been carried out on all patients to evaluate the muscle district of lower limbs,
independently from the traumas they reported.
In the 80%...
Conclusion
Preliminary results seem giving better sensitivity to ultrasound in evaluating muscle lesions,
even though they are old.
Therefore,
we had the possibility to study the same athlete for another sport trauma on another anatomic area.
Furthermore,
enhancing the exam to the thigh where we knew there was a structural hyperechoic modification,
we were able to control the unvaried status of muscle fibers,
which did not show any calcification.
A possible explanation for this is that they kept their muscle functionality,
including elasticity and contractility of...
