Learning objectives
To describe the appropriate indications,
contraindications,
and general technique to perform same basic interventional CT procedures in the skeletal system.
To know the potential complications and how to avoid them.
Background
With advances in imaging technology,
there has been a significant increase in the number and range of interventional musculoskeletal image-guided procedures.
Skeletal system is commonly accessible by ultrasound guided techniques but when dealing with spine or bone lesions CT guided procedures are usually required.
Some of these procedures are minimally invasive and generally very safe while offering valuable diagnostic information as well as therapeutic benefit therefore they can and should be performed by any practitioner.
The procedures are accessible under local anesthesia and do not...
Imaging findings OR Procedure Details
To avoid complications a meticulousprocedure has to be performed and
thorough preparation is essential.
Some general precautions have to be observed
1.
Check the coagulation status.
Any patient under anticoagulant therapy should be discontinued as long as the risk - benefit ratio advises the injeccion Fig. 4
2.
Informed consent.
Patients have to be informed and sign a document describing the procedure,
any posible complication and treatment alternative.
3.
Anesthesia.
All the procedures decribed can be performedwith the patient under conscious sedation using local anesthesia...
Conclusion
Some CT guided procedures can be easily safely performed even by little experienced practitioners.
Strict adherence to the appropriate indications,
contraindications and technical details are required.
