Purpose
The fascia lata,
also known as the deep fascia of the thigh,
is a complex anatomic structure that envelopes the thigh musculature and attaches along the lateral margin of the iliac crest. The fascia lata attachment at the iliac crest (FLAIC) comprises of the fascia lata merging with contributions from the iliotibial band,
the tensor fascia lata muscle and the gluteal aponeurosis (1-6).
The FLAIC is susceptible to acute traumatic injury,
overuse injury,
age-related degeneration and inflammatory disease (1,
7,
8). Pathology of theFLAIC includes...
Methods and Materials
Institutional review board approval at our institution was obtained. A search for “MR hip” and “MR Pelvis MSK” was performed within the PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) from 8/1/2019 to 9/30/2019 and the most recent 100 consecutive cases for each type of MR exam was selected to be a part of the study.
All 100 consecutive patients in the ‘’MR hip’’ group were included in the study.
For the ‘’MR Pelvis MSK’’ group,
only patients without hip or pelvis pain in their history were...
Results
100 consecutive patients were included in each group.
For the MR hip cohort,
the mean age was 55 years (range: 18-91) and included 73 females and 27 males. All patients were referred for MRI because of hip pain or unilateral pelvic pain except for one patient referred for evaluation of soft tissue mass and another patient referred to rule out septic arthritis.
For the pelvis cohort,
the mean age was 60 years (range: 23-89) and included 49 females and 51 males.
84 patients in the...
Conclusion
Lateral hip pain is common and can be due to pathology of a variety of structures including osseous,
soft tissue,
bursal,
or referred pain from other areas of the body (9). Symptoms may be acute or chronic.
Imaging plays a crucial role in evaluation of lateral hip/pelvic pain,
both for diagnosis and potential treatment guidance.
Pathology of the fascia lata insertion at the iliac crest (FLAIC) can result in lateral hip pain,
but is under-recognized clinically and often misdiagnosed (1,
7).
The literature on FLAIC...
