Learning objectives
The purposes of our educational exhibit are:
- to review the anatomy of the 5thmetatarsal bone and its functions from pediatric to adult age
- to illustrate the most important pathologies that involve the 5thmetatarsal bone
Background
The 5th metatarsal bone is a long bone of the foot and,
like others metatarsal bones,
has a base,
a body,
a neck and a head.
The base articulates with thecuboid and,
medially,
with the4th metatarsal. The head articulates with the first phalanx of the 5th toes (fig.1).
The 5thmetatarsal bone is the second smallest of the five metatarsal bones of the foot.Ithas an important function in maintaining the stability of the foot with the calcaneus and the first metatarsal bone.
Furthermore,
it is important for...
Imaging findings OR Procedure Details
From pediatric to adult age,
we can see the normal growth of the 5th metatarsal bone (fig.2-fig.10).
Many pathologies can involve it:
ISELIN DISEASE
Iselin disease is a benign condition,
defined as apophysitis of the5thmetatarsal bone.
It was firstly described by H.
Iselin,
in 1912.
Iselin disease is seen in adolescent (8-13 years old) and it is also seen in males with sport injuries related to a repetitive traction of the peroneus brevis tendon at its insertion.
Symptoms are pain in lateral foot and physical...
Conclusion
We hope that this educational exhibit can be a useful guide for radiologists to review the anatomy and the most important pathologies that involve the 5th metatarsal bone from pediatric to adult age.
