Length of stay ranged from less than 1 day to 17 days (mean 4.4 days).
Of the 42 patients 9 patients were classified as having died from an ST elevation myocardial infarction and 33 from a Non ST myocardial infarction.
Examination of the Non-ST elevation group demonstrated that 10 patients suffered from an out of hospital cardiac arrest or collapse and that 10 patients had other diagnoses including,
aortic dissection,
abdominal perforation,
oesophageal carcinoma,
metastatic lung carcinoma,
severe aortic valve disease and stroke
Of the 22 patients with definite ST or non-ST myocardial infarction 5 patients underwent coronary arteriography of which 3 underwent coronary intervention.
One patient was found to have normal coronary arteries and one patient a coronary dissection not suitable for treatment.
The remainder of the patients were either unfit for examination or died before coronary angiography could be carried out.
20 patients had a cardiac echo examination,
34 patients a chest X ray.
12 patients underwent CT scans; none had cardiac CT despite this being available.
In the patients with non-cardiac CT scanning was responsible for a definitive non cardiac diagnosis in 5 patients
