To describe the findings of Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) of pyomyositis (PM) and correlate these data with the clinical information.
Methods and Materials
Twenty-one patients were diagnosed with PM in our institution from September 2006 to August 2012.
Two patients were excluded,
one who had not received MDCT and one without PM criteria.
Remaining nineteen patients had PM criteria; clinical data of 19 patients and contrast-enhanced-MDCT images were retrospectively analyzed.
The 19 patients were comprised of 14 male patients and 5 female patients with ages from 42 to 85 years (mean,
69.8 years) (See Table 1,
microbiology and laboratory data...
laboratory and microbiology data for the patients with PM are summarized in Table 2 .
A review of the medical records showed that most patients had documented chronic medical problems.
case 1 had not any,
when PM criteria were found,
but diabetes mellitus was discovered two years later (See Table 1 ).
Eighteen patients had one or more underlying medical problems that could have been contributed to the development of PM.
These included diabetes mellitus (DM) (n=8),
malignancies including lung,...
Pyomyositis is an infection which involves one or more skeletal muscle groups,
and which is not a result of infection of adjacent skin,
It was originally described in the tropics1. In our poster,
we attempted to describe the findings of Multidetector Computed Tomography of pyomyositis and correlate these data with the clinical information.
Patients are often otherwise healthy,
but may have a history of trauma,
emigration from or recent travel to a tropical area of the world,
