Intramedullary Gadolinium (Gd) Residuals in Kidneys of Pediatric Oncology Patients: a Word of Caution

Results
10 examinations (31%) of 7 patients (30%,
4 male) fulfilled the required criteria.
Median patient age was 10.5 years (range,
2 – 17 years).
Six examinations (60%) in four patients (57%) displayed renal intramedullary opacifications likely to represent a medullary Gd deposit; two examples are given in Figures 2 and 3.
Median medullary density of the positive examinations was 78.05 HU (range,
53.1 - 139.5 HU) and of the negative examinations 28.6 HU (range,
27.1 – 35.7 HU) which compared well with those of the control group (33.2 HU,
range,
29.2 - 37.1 HU).
Median time interval between MRI of positive examinations was 82.5 minutes (range,
58 – 292 minutes).
Median time interval between MRI of negative examinations was significantly shorter with 66.5 minutes (range,
61 - 80 minutes).
Median eGFR of patiens with positive examinations was 111.1 mLs/min/1.73m² (range,
92.8 - 160.1 mLs/min/1.73m²),
thus only slightly lower than in the patients with negative examinations (median eGFR = 89.3 mls/min/1.73m²,
range,
80.6 - 223.5 mLs/min/1.73m²).
Median eGFR of the control group was 125.8 mls/min/1.73m² (range,
102.6 - 143.7 mLs/min/1.73m²) which compares well with those of the negative patient group.
