Aims and objectives
To evaluate the potential for dose-reduction of uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) applying the new Siemens Artis Q technology.
Methods and materials
From 02/2014-11/2014,
all patients undergoing UFE applying the new Siemens Artis Q technology were included.
Artis Q technology is an angiography system consisting of a powerful X-ray tube and a high-dynamic range detector.
Indications for UFEs were obtained after interdisciplinary consultation and informed consent.
All UFEs were performed as standardized bilateral embolization procedures according to a specific treatment plan (e.g.
“low-dose pelvis” angiography preset,
specified image frames for angiography and stasis in the uterine artery as embolization endpoint) from experienced interventional radiologists (>10 years experience)....
Results
Twenty-four patients with an age of 43.8±5.4 years (30-51) and a body-mass-index of 27.2±3.9kg/m2 (19.3-35.9) were included.
Fluoroscopy-time,
dose-area-product and maximum-entrance-skin-dose were 10.5±2.4min (5.3-15.3),
1443.7±766.2cGycm2 (695.3-3944.6) and 20.4±11.0cGy (8.9-60.1),
respectively.
The systemic review of published data identified 24 articles with 1941 UFEs/patients.
Thereby,
fluoroscopy-time,
dose-area-product and maximum-entrance-skin-dose were 20.7±6.6min (9.0-35.9),
15327.5±8220.1cGycm2 (3060.0-43113.0) and 129.7±46.1cGy (19.5-403.6),
respectively.
Conclusion
Compared with published data,
UFE applying the new Siemens Artis Q technology provides a significant potential for dose-reduction.
Knowledge gained in this field should be in the interest of the ESR “EuroSafeImaging” campaign (www.eurosafeimaging.org).
