Learning objectives
This educational exhibit will review the technical aspects of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR),
including pulse sequences,
physiologic gating,
normal cardiovascular anatomy,
and image post-processing.
Background
CMR is a powerful tool for depicting cardiac morphology,
function,
flow,
and tissue characterization.
Due to the superb delineation between blood pool and myocardium,
CMR is well suited to evaluate regional and global myocardial function.
It has become the gold-standard for measuring ventricular volumetric indices.
However,
the technical aspects of CMR can seem overwhelming to trainees and practicing physicians who only occasionally image the heart.
In order to plan,
perform,
post-process and interpret a CMR study,
the physician must possess a clear understanding of cardiac...
Findings and procedure details
1.
Essential cardiac anatomy: (from right to left)
Right atrium (RA):
Anterolateral in position.
lies inferior to the left atrium
Superior vena cava enters through the roof
Inferior vena cava enters from below,
near the septum.
The coronary sinus (carries venous return from the heart) enters anterior and just to the left of the inferior vena cava.
Right atrial appendage:
Trabecularized part of the right atrium (contains small muscular bundles which run parallel to the atrium itself)
Flat and triangular in shape
Partially covers the...
Conclusion
An understanding of basic concepts will equip the readers and theirteam to perform and post-process CMR studies.
