Conclusion
378 emergency adult and 94 emergency paediatric ultrasounds were performed in our center during the 4 year period we examined.
A wide range of pathologies were identified with specific ultrasound features.
Although there are innumerable abnormalities of the scrotum,
there are key features of the commonest and most critical disease processes.
The most frequent indications for ultrasound are exclusion of torsion of the spermatic cord or epididymitis.
When torsion of the spermatic cord is identified clinically,
ultrasound is not indicated but immediate surgical exploration should be undertaken.
Only in equivocal cases should ultrasound be used to exclude other causes,
with the main abnormality,
epididymitis,
demonstrating characteristic features on ultrasound.
This exhibit gives a comprehensive aid to accurate diagnosis and subsequent prompt intervention where required.
