Findings and procedure details
We describe 4 patients with an average age of 33 years at the time of presentation of symptoms.
Three of the patients were women and one male patient.
In all cases,
the injection site was the buttocks.
The average time between the last injection and the onset of symptoms was 90 hours.
All patients presented with dyspnea and developed respiratory failure with the need for invasive mechanical ventilation.
The outcome of one of the patients is unknown since he was transferred from the institution; of the remaining 3,
one died during the hospital stay.
In the same way,
2 patients presented other complications due to the injection,
which made other therapeutic interventions necessary.
Chest radiography was performed in all patients and then CT pulmonary angiography in a 64 detector CT scanner.
In all cases,
multiplanar reformations in coronal and sagittal planes were provided.
Peripheral areas of increased lung attenuation consistent with ground-glass opacities along with septal thickening was found in all patients,
in relation to the pattern described in the literature.
(figure 3) In 3 patients,
associated consolidations were found.
(figure 1,2,4,5) In no case was pleural fluid demonstrated.
