Background
The abdominal pain is one of the most common complaints in the pediatric and neonatal emergency room.
Early diagnosis is a key tool to properly manage these patients.
The particularities of the images of the gastrointestinal tract and of the diseases common to the pediatric age group are usually a challenge to less experienced radiologists.
The US is a tool widely used to assess the gastrointestinal tract in children.
Its main advantages are the easy access and the radiation free environment.
Particularly in children,
their anatomic profile allows the use of high frequency transducer in order to obtain images with a better definition.
Some of the disadvantages of the U.S are its operator-dependency as well as factors related to the patient such as gas distention,
obesity and the lack of collaboration from patient.
The purpose of this article is to reveal the ultrasonographic findings of pathologies related to the gastrointestinal tract most commonly found in a pediatric emergency service.
Therefore,
we collected abdomen US images of patients up to the age of 17 years,
admitted in the emergency room of a tertiary pediatric hospital in the state of Ceara (Brazil).
