Learning objectives
To review the information that must be included in the radiologist’s report about the potential renal transplant donor and transplant recipient.
Explain and illustrate the most common renal transplant related complications.
Background
Renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for many patients with end-stage renal
disease (ESRD) and is associated with lower mortality and improved quality of life compared with chronic dialysis treatment.
The first long-term successful kidney transplantation was performed in 1954 by Dr.
Joseph Murray at the “Peter Bent Brigham Hospital” in Boston.
Renal transplantation is now a routine clinical practice in more than 80 countries.
Findings and procedure details
DONOR
Laparoscopic nephrectomy has become the preferred surgical procedure for procuring kidneys from living donors.
The left kidney is preferred for laparoscopic nephrectomy in living donors because it is technically easier to remove and has a longer renal vein compared to the right kidney.
Multidetector computed tomographic angiography(MDCTA) is the modality of choice for preoperative evaluation of living renal donors and the radiologist is able to provide the surgeon with valuable information about abdominal anatomy ,
vascular pathways,
collecting system abnormalities,
the possible variants and...
Conclusion
MDCT is a minimally invasive and highly accurate method for preoperative and postoperativ evaluation of renal donors,
recipientsas well as complications of renal transplantation
