Background
Stroke can be defined as an acute central nervous system injury with an abrupt onset,
and is the third leading cause of mortality in developed countries,
and also a major cause of morbidity.
It is a syndrome caused by disruption of the blood flow to part of the brain.
-Risk factors of stroke: high blood pressure (the most important one),
cigarette smoking,
diabetes,
obesity,
isquemic cardiopathy,
atrial fibrillation...
-Types:
- Hemorrhagic stroke (15%): rupture of a blood vessel,
with injury to cells and sudden loss of focal brain functions.
- Ischemic stroke (85%): due to occlusion of a blood vessel.
It can be further divided into two groups: thrombotic and embolic strokes.

The goals of the imaging evaluation are to establish a diagnosis as early as possible and to obtain information for guidance on selecting the appropriate therapy.
