Aims and objectives
The National Joint Registery has reported that in England and Wales the number of total hip and knee replacement procedures performed each year is approximately 160,000.
Approximately the same number of hip and knee joints are replaced.
Templating balls are routinely used in pre-operative planning of total hip arthoplasty to help select appropriately sized implants.
All patients presenting to A&E with a suspected Neck of femur fracture should have a trauma pelvis/hip x-ray:
AP to include the whole of the pelvic girdle
Horizontal beam lateral of hip to demonstarte the fracture
Standard states "Templating ball must be included on images.
If the templating ball is not included on the AP or lateral hip an additional coned AP hip should be included with the templating ball at the bone height".
The aim of this audit was to compare clinical practice to hospital standards.
Previous studies have shown that templating balls are not always included in pelvic x-rays for patients presenting with suspected NOF fractures.
