Aims and objectives
The use of smartphone captured images for consultation is becoming increasingly popular due to improvement of the quality of the smartphone’s cameras and display screens.
In the recent years there has been major development of smartphones,
their applications,
screen resolution and camera’s image quality.
The development of multimedia applications and it is easy access through smartphones,
enabled physicians and healthcare workers to share clinical cases and data for academic or clinical purposes.
Some applications support end to end individual secure encrypted conversations which help secure patient data transfer and can be used to consult out-of-hospital physicians for their advice in critical or rare cases. Radiology images stored in PACS require special applications to access them remotely using smartphones.
Capture of radiology images from the PACS workstation monitors using smartphones camera has been increasingly used due to wide availability of smartphones,
great improvement of the resolution of the camera and the screen and improvement of the wireless internet coverage.
The images can be transferred as a multimedia message or using social media application,
commonly WhatsApp
The aim of the study was to assess the diagnostic performance of reading CT scan of the abdomen using smartphone compared to reading from PACS workstation to diagnose acute appendicitis.
The study assessed impact of radiologists experience and image capturing quality on diagnosis reliability.
