Aims and objectives
Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide among men,
being the second more common one in developed countries[1,
In the United States,
it is the second leading cause of new cancers and the first cause of deaths from cancer in both genders.
Surgical resection is considered the standard treatment of primary and metastatic resectable lung tumors[4,
the minority of the patients are diagnosed in a resectable stage and many patients with resectable disease are high-risk surgical candidates. In this scenario,
Methods and materials
The Institutional Review Board approved this retrospective study and waived the requirement of informed written consent.
We searched our database for consecutive patients who underwent SBRT due to lung cancer stages I or II or pulmonary metastasis at our institution from 2007 to 2015.
Patients were excluded if they had only a single CT performed during the follow-up or confirmed pulmonary infection during follow-up CT (by clinical suspicion,
radiological changes and treatment).
Patients selection is demonstrated on Figure 1.Clinical,
radiological and SBRT data...
Population and Clinical Data
54 patients were included in the study,
40 (74.1%) men and 14 (25.9%) women,
with mean age of 76.5 years old (IQR: 69-82).
Eight patients had no comorbidity (14.8%),
18 (33.4%) had one comorbidity,
while 28 (51.8%) had more than one.Smoking was present in 40 (74.1%) patients.
Adenocarcinoma was the tumor histology in 43 (79.6%),
squamous cell carcinoma in 9 (16.7%) and 2 (3.7%) patients had other histologic diagnosis.
35 (66.7%) were at clinical staging IA at the time of the...
SBRT is an effectivenon-invasive method used to deliver high doses of ionizing radiation to a small tumor volume,
and has been increasingly used as the principal therapy specially in patients with poor performance status and stage I lung cancer,
who historically had a standard treatment with lobectomy or pneumonectomy.
SBRT resulted in a different pattern of lung actinic changes,
and its understanding is crucial to evaluate treatment response and recurrence.
The current classification of SBRT lung changes and recurrence findings was evaluated by three radiologists,...
