Learning objectives
1.
To discuss the most common brain ring-enhancing lesions emphasizing the differential diagnosis.
2.
To describe some important imaging characteristics that may help narrow the differential diagnosis.
3.
To illustrate these lesions using computed tomography and specially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Background
Ring-enhancing intracranial lesions are considered as common and quite challenging diagnostic dilemma.
These lesions may present as solitary or multiple on a brain CT or MRI and are characterized by a contrast enhancing halo with a non-enhancing center.
Clinical presentations are usually nonspecific and hardly lead to a final diagnosis.
They can be seen in different pathological conditions such as primary brain tumors,
abscesses,
granulomas,
resolving hematomas and infarcts.
The purpose of this presentation is to describe intracranial ring enhancing mass lesions and to discuss...
Findings and procedure details
INTRODUCTION
Intracranial ring enhancing lesions of different etiologies have a similar appearance on conventional MRI.
These lesions may present as solitary or multiple and are characterized by a contrast enhancing halo with a non-enhancing center.
"MAGICAL DR" (Fig.
2),
is a mnemonic used to help remember the differential diagnosis.
In this pictorial review,
CT and particularly MRI findings of intracranial ring enhancing lesions are addressed and the most important imaging features for their differential diagnosis are presented.
As we approach a ring-enhancing lesion,
there are...
Conclusion
MRI is the most sensitive modality in the characterization of intracranial ring enhancing lesions.
It plays a critical role in patient management by suggesting the correct diagnosis based on characteristic imaging findings.
